Day 16 – Secret Amputee

Right hand starts trouble- cut it off.
Left hand won’t behave- cut it off.
Legs buckle, arms ache, shoulders sag- cut them off.
You don’t need those; steel yourself.
Be a new creation of cogs and bolts
and let the world know you won’t take it.

I won’t think you’re wrong for that.

But the easier, prettier, modern way
is of course the thing to do;
why waste so many snips and tears and repairs?
Get right down to the heart of it,
one seed to extract,
and you’re on your way to a tougher you-
a suffering no one will ever see:
secret amputee.
