Day 97 – We Will Make Lovely Graves

All I have to give
are two tiny hands to hold
until flesh falls off the bones

and then what I can give you
is just a place to rest
side by side in eternal sleep.

With my eyes closed, the big hope
is to leave the world behind
better things than I could afford
for you

because an age full of strangers
is more easily impressed
when one is too dead to care.

And though all of us try
to outlive ourselves
we will make lovely graves
just the same

as will each of us carry
the regret that we had only
two tiny hands to give.
