Day 119 – The Line

There is a fine, panicked, jumpy little line
between standing your ground
and madness.

It changes daily in its shifting doubt,
writhing underfoot and you
will sometimes find yourself
on the wrong side, in the dark.

And when you know for sure
that you’re on that side,
it will make you quit,
to save yourself.

But if you stand and truly stand
I think you will find
the only madness is in believing
there ever was a line.

For to commit to standing
is to resign to madness,
to exist in a lonely plane,
swallowing each bitter sacrifice
for the sake of what you gave worth.

And while you’re standing in that madness
that changes daily in its shifting doubt,
writhing underfoot,
you will sometimes find yourself
on the wrong side of the line,
in the dark.

  1. Charlotte, I like what you are attempting to do but it seems confusing. I don’t want to get into a spitball match over it, but I really think it has good bones to it. >KB

  2. Appreciate the feedback, was experiencing a bit of madness myself and wanted to play with bringing that feeling into the poem. Not my best poem, but the fact that the confusion is evident (which was pretty much the point) is encouraging.

  3. pretty good stuff … sort of a rock and a hard place dilemma …

    – if you don’t stand you fall into the dark (fairly basic idea), but
    – if you do stand you have no choice but to admit that you’re effectively in a fight, and thus apparently not at true and real peace with your friend (or whoever), which means that really you apparently alone … which leads back to dark dang it.
