Day 137 – When It’s Time To Go Back

With the prayers of your sleep,
before your moistened lids
break the solemn calm
of nightly death,
before it’s formed in words,
its presence recognized,
the readiness
will tug you out of bed-
when it’s time to go back,
you will know.

When you’ve wintered away,
fever-worked alone enough
to earn the silent pride
that you’ve withheld
and at last you’re grinning wildly
to an audience of one
and you think there’s no more need
of a return-
when it’s time to go back,
you will know.

For the world will need you then,
will need to know what’s possible
when you’re all alone
and satisfied as hell,
when the gift you have to give
is what you die for every day,
but you know that you can’t
hoard it anymore-
when it’s time to go back,
you will know.
