Day 267 – My October

After winning back my October
I would not for all the roses
relinquish what I’ve wrested;
I would watch them slowly die
in chill winds.

Fighting for my October
took the heaving heart of me
left me just the strength to rock
and breathe the nutmeg air alone
on the porch.

They can no more have my October
than I can have a rose-
what I’ve earned, I will keep,
what it kills, I will mourn,
but have no more flowers red,
and no more thorns.
