Year 2: Day 61 – Rubber Gloves

We know it in business
but maybe not in love-
character is built
by cleaning toilets.

Any ladder starts
on the lowest rung
and a promotion is earned
from a job well done
and how could love
be any other way?

Would I prize my library half so much
if I had not cleared out the spiders first?
Would my heart see the value of quiet calm
if it hadn’t seen turmoil first?

Can we hope for perfect love
if we’ve thrown all our exes
in a ditch?
Can we know how to cherish
when the time has come
if we never fully have before?

In business we prepare
for a grueling climb to the top
which experience will ease-
so, too, must we form ourselves
for love
with a pair of rubber gloves.
